Successful Hot Tub Planning

OK – 6 feet from inside face of tub to breaker is the minimum allowed by code, and presuming this is in sight of the tub should be to code – provided the breaker is GFCI breaker, or there is a built-in GFCI breaker in the hot tub. Bottom line – Sounds like the original contractor is milking you a bit, figuring you are on the hook. Course, if this is under a building permit, maybe you are on the hook – might require a new permit and reinspection to change electricians mid-road, plus if under same permit yuou could get into an issue of which electrician is responsible if any of the previous work is failed in the inspection.

DIY – if you ask if it is something you can do yourself, then no you are not qualified – you do NOT want a 50A short circuit occurring in your hot tub because you made a wrong or bad connection or bought the wrong materials. Good luck and good soaking. And sitting here at about 30 below windchill and 5 below actual temp with 3 feet of snow on the ground, you really made me jealous saying that the weather is “finally” nice in your area – another month to two before we can even think of saying that!

On the West Coast, this is a common framing plan to support a 7×7 tub with a potential psf live load. The footings and piers are reinforced and connected to each other with 4 rebar, and the 4×4 posts are reinforced as shown with diagonal bracing. If a hot tub is going to be elevated, the framing will have to support it. Because the loads from the tub, the water, and the occupants can exceed pounds per square foot—and most decks are designed to support combined live and dead loads of only 50 pounds per square foot—additional structural support is usually needed.
